Periodontics
All-On-6®
The All-On-4
Periodontal disease (periodontitis) affects the tissues that support the teeth. If left untreated, it leads to tooth mobility and, ultimately, tooth loss. Periodontal treatment aims to stop the infection and restore gum health.
At Dr. Nicolau’s Clinic, we take this issue very seriously. If left untreated, periodontitis not only leads to tooth loss but has also been linked in recent medical studies to serious systemic conditions, such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The good news? Modern technology now allows us to halt the progression of the disease and restore the health of your gums.
Prophylaxis
Warning signs:
Periodontal disease is often „silent” in its early stages (it doesn't hurt), which is why you should pay attention to the following details:
- Bleeding during brushing: It is the first and most obvious sign of inflammation. Healthy gums never bleed.
- Altered gums: If you notice that your gums are reddish-purple, swollen, or sensitive to the touch.
- Gingival recession: If you feel like your teeth „seem longer” or if the root of the tooth becomes visible.
- Dental mobility: When you feel that a tooth moves slightly when touched or has shifted position while biting down.
- Persistent bad breath: Bad breath that doesn't go away after brushing is often caused by bacteria that have accumulated in periodontal „pockets.”.
- Discomfort when chewing: A feeling of tightness or mild pain when eating harder foods.
Treatment
Periodontal treatment no longer necessarily involves traumatic surgical procedures. We use minimally invasive methods to clear the infection at the root:
- Periodontal Assessment (Probing): We measure the depth of the spaces between the teeth and the gums to determine the exact stage of the disease.
- SRP (Scaling and Root Planing): A deep subgingival cleaning (scaling) that removes tartar and bacteria from the root of the tooth, where regular brushing or scaling cannot reach.
- Laser Therapy: We use laser technology to sterilize periodontal pockets. The laser selectively eliminates harmful bacteria and promotes biostimulation (rapid healing and reattachment of the gum to the tooth).
- Monitoring and Maintenance: Periodontitis is a chronic disease. After active treatment, we establish a schedule of regular checkups to ensure that the infection does not recur.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I do if my gums bleed when I brush my teeth?
Bleeding is the first sign of inflammation. If left untreated, it can lead to periodontal disease and tooth loss. We use laser therapy and subgingival curettage to stop the infection and protect the „foundation” of your smile.
Can periodontitis be completely cured?
Periodontal disease can be halted. Through subgingival curettage and laser therapy, we eliminate the infection, and the gum reattaches to the tooth, preventing tooth mobility.
Is laser therapy painful?
On the contrary, laser treatment is minimally invasive, sterilizes periodontal pockets, and reduces the need for traditional anesthesia in many cases, thereby speeding up healing.
If my teeth have already started to shift, is there anything I can still do?
Yes! Mobility does not automatically mean extraction. Through thorough cleaning and temporary stabilization techniques, we can stabilize the teeth and extend their lifespan in the dental arch.
Is periodontitis hereditary?
There is a genetic predisposition, but the main factor is bacterial plaque. If your parents lost their teeth at an early age, you should have more frequent preventive checkups.
After periodontal treatment, will the gums grow back?
The gums will go down and become pink and healthy. If they have already receded, they will not grow back naturally, but we can intervene later through cosmetic gum procedures (grafts).
