Endodontic treatment (commonly known as a „root canal”) plays a vital role: saving a tooth whose pulp (nerve) has been affected by infection or severe trauma. At Dr. Nicolau’s Clinic, we view extraction as a last resort. Our priority is to preserve the natural tooth in the dental arch, using advanced techniques that ensure long-term treatment success and completely eliminate pain.
Prophylaxis
When is root canal treatment necessary?
The most common signs indicating that the nerve is affected are:
- Spontaneous and severe pain, which often throbs.
- Prolonged sensitivity with hot or cold food.
- Tooth Discoloration (it becomes grayer or darker).
- The appearance of a lump at the gum line (dental abscess).
How does the procedure take place?
- Diagnosis and Isolation: We use digital X-rays to see the exact anatomy of the root canals. The use of digii (a protective rubber dam) ensures a sterile working environment by preventing bacteria in the saliva from entering the root canal and protecting the patient from disinfectant solutions.
- Root Canal Preparation (Mechanical Cleaning): This step is performed using state-of-the-art rotary systems, which are much faster and more precise than traditional manual files. We clean the canal all the way to the root tip, giving it the optimal shape for sealing.
- Chemical Disinfection: We use special antibacterial agents that penetrate even the finest branches of the root canals, eliminating any trace of infection.
- Root Canal Filling (3D Sealing): This is the final step, in which we „fill” the cleaned space. We use the method 3D filling with hot gutta-percha, which fits perfectly against the walls of the canal, sealing it tightly to prevent reinfection.

Frequently Asked Questions
If my tooth doesn't hurt, why does the cavity need to be treated?
Small cavities are asymptomatic. If you wait until pain sets in, it means the infection has reached the nerve, requiring root canal treatment (endodontics), which is more complex and more expensive than a simple filling.
Is root canal treatment painful?
No. At Dr. Nicolau’s office, we use modern anesthesia techniques and rotary instruments that make the procedure comfortable. The goal of root canal treatment is precisely to eliminate pain and save the natural tooth from extraction.
Why does a tooth turn black after a root canal?
Teeth may become discolored over time due to a lack of blood supply or old filling materials. This problem can be resolved through in-office whitening or by covering the tooth with a crown or veneer.
If I have a cyst at the root of a tooth, can the tooth still be saved?
In many cases, yes. A properly performed root canal treatment, carried out using a rubber dam and with thorough decontamination, can lead to the resolution of the cyst without the need for surgery.
What is endodontic „retreatment”?
If a previous treatment failed (the infection returned), we clean the root canals again, disinfect them, and seal them. It’s a more complex procedure, but it gives the tooth a second chance.
