Bone grafting – what is it and why is it necessary?
For a dental implant to be stable and durable, it needs enough bone to anchor it in. In some situations, the jawbone may be too thin, too low, or damaged from an old extraction, periodontal disease, or trauma.
In such cases, bone augmentation is recommended – a procedure that adds bone material to the area where it is missing, to create the necessary base for implant insertion.
Why does bone loss occur?
Bone loss is common when:
- the tooth was extracted a long time ago;
- there is periodontal disease (periodontitis);
- the patient has removable prostheses that no longer support the bone;
- there are dental infections or old traumas.
Without sufficient bone, the implant cannot be stable and cannot last long-term.
How is bone addition performed?
The procedure is simple and is performed under local anesthesia. The surgeon adds bone material (the patient's own or special biomaterial) to the deficient area. This will stimulate the natural regeneration of the bone, and in a few months it will fully integrate.
