Answers about professional cleaning
Brushing at home cannot remove tartar (dental calculus) or bacterial plaque from hard-to-reach areas. These deposits can only be removed at the dentist's office.
We recommend a professional cleaning at least once a year. If you smoke, wear braces, have crowns, bridges, or implants, or are prone to gum disease, we recommend a professional cleaning every 6 months.
Scaling removes hard deposits. Airflow uses a jet of water, air, and fine powder to clean plaque and stains from coffee, tea, or tobacco, even between the teeth.
If your gums were inflamed, slight bleeding or tenderness during the first 24–48 hours is normal. As the inflammation subsides, your gums will heal.
Cleaning removes stains from the surface of the teeth, making them look cleaner and lighter in color. The natural color of the enamel does not change. That’s what professional whitening is for.
