When the nerve inside a tooth is inflamed or infected, we clean and seal the root canals. The tooth can then be restored with a filling or a crown.

When necessary
Signs That the Tooth Nerve Is Affected
Small cavities don't hurt. By the time pain sets in, the infection has usually reached the nerve. The sooner you see a dentist, the better your chances of saving the tooth.
Pulsating pain
Pain that occurs spontaneously, sometimes at night, and does not respond to standard pain relievers.
Prolonged sensitivity
Pain caused by hot or cold foods or drinks persists even after you've finished eating or drinking.
Dark-colored tooth or swollen gum
The tooth turns gray or darker, or a swelling appears on the gum (abscess).

How the treatment works
For infected teeth, treatment is sometimes carried out in two sessions, with a dressing applied between them. The dentist will let you know from the start how many visits will be needed.

Diagnosis
Consultation and X-ray
The dentist examines the tooth and takes a digital X-ray to determine the shape and number of root canals.

Preparation
Anesthesia and Isolation
The tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic and isolated with a protective sheet (rubber dam) to prevent saliva and bacteria from entering the root canal.

Cleaning
Cleaning and disinfecting the canals
Under a microscope, the root canals are cleaned all the way to the tip of the root using rotary instruments and then disinfected.

Completion
Sealing the canals
The canals are filled with a special material (gutta-percha), which seals them tightly. Then the visible part of the tooth is restored.

The price depends on the number of roots in the tooth. Front teeth usually have a single root canal, while molars have three or four.

Answers About Root Canal Treatment
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Its purpose is precisely to relieve the pain and save the tooth.
Small cavities don't hurt. If you wait until you feel pain, the infection can reach the nerve, and treatment becomes more complex and expensive than a simple filling.
A tooth without a nerve may discolor over time, especially if it has old fillings. The discoloration can be corrected through in-office whitening or by covering the tooth with a crown or a veneer.
Not always. A properly performed root canal treatment, which involves isolating the tooth and carefully disinfecting the canals, can often lead to healing without the need for surgery. Your dentist will let you know after reviewing the X-ray.
The treatment is redone: the root canals are emptied, cleaned, and disinfected again, then sealed. It’s a more complex procedure, but one that gives the tooth a second chance.
